What is HughesNet®?
HughesNet® is the high-speed Internet solution that’s available to everyone in the contiguous United States with a clear view of the southern sky. HughesNet uses satellite technology, not your phone line, to give you a super-fast, always-on Internet connection. HughesNet gets you online instantly, lets you surf and open pages faster and download files in a fraction of the time it takes on a dial-up modem.

Do I still need a dial-up modem and telephone line?
No. There is no phone line or dial-up data modem required to use your HughesNet® service.
Are there activities that are not recommended for use with a Satellite Connection?
1. VPNs.VPNs do not work well over satellite. You may use a VPN with HughesNet plans, but you will likely experience reduced speeds by as much as 50–75%. You can restore your connection to full speed by simply disabling your VPN client when your session is over. Note: HughesNet Technical Support does not provide help with configuring or troubleshooting problems associated with VPN clients.

2. Twitch Games. Time-sensitive applications that require fractions-of-a-second user inputs (such as multi-player “twitch” games or real-time equities trading) are not recommended with HughesNet® due to latency issues. Latency refers to the amount of time it takes a packet of data to travel across a network. With satellite service, that data must travel up to the satellite and back (about 45,000 miles). This round trip adds about a half-second delay to the total time your computer takes to communicate with a Website or host server.

3. Heavy downloading. The HughesNet Home Service plan is not recommended for heavy downloading. The Elite Service Plans are faster and can handle heavier downloads. Note however that the Fair Access Policy applies.

4. VoIP. Voice over IP doesn’t work well on a residential Hughes system with satellite due to the latency issues mentioned above. However, Hughes does offer a VoIP solution in the Enterprise market.

5. Streaming Video. Streaming Video is bandwidth-intensive. If you intend to watch videos you may exceed your download threshold. Check your current plan or consider upgrading to a higher bandwidth plan.

Is HughesNet a solution for Rural Satellite Internet service?

A recently published Pew Internet & American Life Project memo states that only 24 percent of rural residents have Internet access at home.* This small number is a result of many factors, but one of the major reasons is that many cable and DSL Internet service providers do not provide rural broadband Internet services.

Of course, many people living in rural areas access the Internet through dial-up phone lines—a frustrating and slow experience. With a dial-up Internet connection it can take almost a minute (sometimes longer) for certain Web pages to load on your screen. Sometimes images and documents cannot be accessed at all because of a slow dial-up connection. Plus, using dial-up as your rural Internet connection ties up your phone line.

Rural Broadband Internet Access

HughesNet® is your solution. With rural satellite Internet, slow or no Internet access is a thing of the past. Now, no matter where you live in the contiguous United States—rural area or urban area—you can have high-speed Internet access like you’ve never had before. And you'll finally be able to surf the Internet without tying up your phone lines.

When you order HughesNet for your rural Internet access, a certified HughesNet installer will visit your home and install the Internet service. Installation includes affixing a satellite dish (antenna) to the roof of your home in a south-facing direction and connecting your computer to a satellite modem. It doesn't matter where you live. Your home can be connected to broadband Internet—even in rural areas!

Choosing the right HughesNet service plan and signing up for rural Internet access is simple. Order online or call us today so you can begin surfing at high speeds!

What is Broadband Satellite Internet for the home?

With HughesNet® you can have broadband satellite Internet access in your home regardless of where you live and without tying up your phone lines. Order HughesNet and a certified HughesNet installer will visit your home to install a satellite dish and modem. This will give you broadband satellite Internet access from your home computer.

What Does Broadband Mean?

Simply put, broadband means high-speed Internet access. To understand it more specifically, you have to think in terms of data transmission or the amount of time it takes to send messages from your computer to another computer. In other words, how long does it take for you to download information from a Website?

A typical dial-up Internet connection allows for data transfer of 56 kilobits a second. This is a slow data transfer rate. A broadband satellite Internet connection provides a data transfer rate of up to five times that much.

With download speeds from 1 megabit per second to 5 megabits per second , a broadband satellite Internet connection from HughesNet provides faster download times of images and documents, and the capability of viewing more online information at one time without frustration or interruptions in service.

With a high rate of data transmission, broadband satellite Internet users are able to receive information and post information online at high speed. All of this can be done with increased download speeds with HughesNet.

Understanding Broadband Satellite Internet

Broadband satellite Internet has several parts. When you make a request using your computer (let's say you want to read the news on your favorite news Website), your computer sends that message through your satellite modem to the satellite dish attached to your home. Next, the message is sent to the satellite and back down to the HughesNet Network Operations Center (NOC). The NOC then contacts the Website (news site) and sends all that information back to your home computer following exactly the same path it used to send the data in the first place.

It's a pretty amazing technological feat, and it’s all made possible at the speed of light.

All data transmission is sent at the speed of light—186,000 miles per second. Even though the satellites could be as far away as 22,000 miles, transmission usually takes only 500 to 900 milliseconds to travel back and forth.

That's not even a blink of the eye.

Understanding broadband satellite Internet access isn’t easy, but using it in your home is made easy through HughesNet, your broadband satellite Internet service. Are you ready to free up your phone lines and finally have the broadband satellite Internet access you deserve? Select your satellite Internet plan today.

What are my options for High-Speed Satellite Internet?

For the home user, there are various high speed Internet options with HughesNet®. All of the satellite Internet plans come with an always-on connection; super-fast downloads; 24/7 technical support; a minimum of five email accounts; and email spam and virus filtering.

Determine what plan you need at home based on your Internet needs. If you like to download videos and often visit Websites that contain many graphics, then the ElitePremium plan may be the best option for you with its high speed Internet download speed of up to 5.0 Mbps. On the other hand, if you use the Internet mainly for checking and sending email, then the Home plan may meet your needs with a download speed of 1.0 Mbps. For more details on satellite Internet pricing and plan descriptions, visit the Plans & Pricing page. Once you've decided what meets your high-speed Internet connection needs, get started with HughesNet by signing up today.

Satellite Internet Connection Technology

In order to have a satellite Internet connection in your home, you will need to have a satellite dish (antenna) attached to the roof of your home and a satellite modem connected to your home computer.

The satellite and modem technology is provided to you by Hughes and is installed by a certified installer at a time that is convenient for you. Inside your home, the installer needs to connect the satellite modem to your personal computer. The connection enables you to have that fast satellite Internet speed that won't tie up your phone lines.

To learn more about satellite Internet speed or sign up for a satellite Internet connection, visit the Plans and Pricing page to place your satellite Internet order.

What is Internet via Satellite?

Hughes is able to offer high-speed Internet service via satellite for homes all over the country, including those in rural areas. This is thanks to satellite technology that is much like the satellite systems used for televisions.

With HughesNet®, you can receive Internet by satellite. The Internet connection reaches your personal computer via a satellite that communicates with your dish and modem through the Hughes Network Operating Centers (NOC).

Once you sign up for HughesNet, a certified installer will contact you to set up a time to come to your home and install your satellite Internet system. The system contains a satellite dish and modem. The satellite dish is small enough to be attached to your home in a south-facing direction. Find out what to expect at installation.

The satellite dish needs to face south because most satellites are positioned in space near the earth's equator. Depending on where your home is located, these satellites could be as far as 22,000 miles away, but because Internet via satellite is so technologically advanced this distance hardly makes a difference, even with rural Internet connections.

Latency as a Result of Internet by Satellite

Although it takes less than a second to send data to and from your satellite Internet system, there is a small delay that is referred to as latency. This is customary with any satellite feed, even Internet via satellite, and it doesn't affect most Internet usage. However, users are discouraged from participating in certain video games, like multi-player “twitch” games for example, because the latency does cause a delay.

This is similar to the delay you may have experienced when using a cell phone. In most cases, latency isn’t apparent while surfing online. Once the technology is set up in your home, connecting to the Internet via satellite is simple.

With a broadband satellite Internet connection from Hughes, you can have high-speed Internet access regardless of where you live and without using a phone line.

What are the most common myths about satellite broadband providers?

Some people may be hesitant to subscribe to satellite Internet because of myths they’ve heard – or because they are unaware of the convenience and quality offered by satellite broadband providers.

Myth #1 – Satellite Internet service providers don’t cater to rural residents.

Hughes offers satellite Internet everywhere in the contiguous United States, including rural areas. Hughes is a reliable satellite broadband provider that supplies high-speed Internet service in areas where cable and DSL are not always available.

Myth #2 – The satellite dish must be attached to a roof.

Although 97% of the time satellite antennas are attached to the roof of a home, satellite Internet service providers don’t always require it. A HughesNet-certified installer is able to determine where on (or near) your home the satellite should be mounted.

Myth #3 – Using Satellite Internet ties up your phone line.

HughesNet® delivers high-speed Internet access over satellite – not over your telephone line – so you can talk on the phone and surf the Web at the same time. That can save you money by eliminating the need for a second phone line.

Myth #4 – Satellite Internet equipment is big and complicated.

The eight-foot wide satellite dishes from the 1980s are a thing of the past, at least when it comes to the satellite dishes provided by most broadband providers. Residential customers of HughesNet only need a computer, modem, two coaxial cables, and the satellite antenna. The antenna is just .74 meters wide.

Myth #5 – When it is cloudy, satellite Internet doesn’t work.

Your satellite Internet connection is not affected by most clouds. Satellite Internet from HughesNet is only affected by weather in extreme circumstances such as heavy storms or unusually dense clouds. If you have difficulties with your service, contact HughesNet Customer Care and Technical Support staff.

Does Hughes provide high-speed Internet options to everyone in the United States?

Because of advancements in technology, Hughes is able to offer high-speed Internet via satellite to almost anyone in the United States. As a satellite ISP provider, Hughes is dedicated to supplying reliable satellite Internet connections for customers. Since many Hughes customers live in rural areas where cable and DSL are not available, HughesNet is one of the only high-speed Internet options available. Hughes takes pride in offering reliable high-speed Internet to those who wouldn’t normally have this option.

Definition of terms for high-speed & satellite Internet

As a satellite Internet ISP, Hughes strives to offer a reliable high-speed Internet option with a customer-friendly and easy-to-use service. This list of glossary terms is meant to familiarize you with satellite Internet and answer questions you may have.

56K line – Most dial-up Internet connections use a telephone line that allows transfer of data at 56,000 bits per second. 56K line refers to this type of Internet connection.

Bandwidth – This term describes the amount of data that can be sent through a particular Internet connection or network. High-bandwidth Internet connections (faster than 768 kilobits per second) are often called “broadband” or “high-speed Internet.”

Bit – A single binary value; a bit is the smallest piece of computer data. Many bits are needed to transmit even the simplest file.

Broadband – Broadband refers to an Internet connection with download speed in excess of 768 kilobits per second.

Dial-up – This term refers to an Internet connection through a home telephone line.

DSL (digital subscriber line) – Allows user to access the Internet by way of existing telephone lines.

Ethernet – A commonly used local area network (LAN) that connects computers to one another and/or connects a computer to the Internet.

Firewall – Software that protects your computer network from outside users.

High-speed Internet option – An ISP (that is, satellite, cable, or DSL) offers an Internet service option that provides enough bandwidth for high-speed Internet use.

IP (Internet protocol) – Programming language that serves as the backbone of the Internet. “IP” is short for “IP address.”

IP Address – Every computer has its own IP number, which acts as the computer’s identification. IP addresses are unique for each computer connected to the Internet. They are much like a physical address.

ISP (Internet Service Provider) – Each ISP offers service options to customers that range in bandwidth, type of connection, and other options such as email, storage space, and virus protection.

Kilobit – 1024 bits of data. Internet speeds are often measured in kilobits per second (kbps).

Megabit – One million bits

Modem – A modem connects your computer to a phone line, cable, or satellite. The modem acts as an interpreter between the two devices so that digital messages can be sent from your computer to another computer or to a satellite dish.

Satellite dish – An antenna affixed to a structure that sends and receives data. Home satellite users typically receive Internet access or television via satellite.

Satellite Internet – Using a modem, coaxial cables, and satellite dish, computer users are able to access high- speed broadband Internet.

Satellite ISP provider – An Internet service provider that offers a satellite Internet connection to homes or businesses. A satellite ISP provider is particularly beneficial for rural residents.

How does a satellite Internet connection work?

HughesNet customers only need an antenna and modem to access the Internet via satellite. Satellite Internet connections are easy with HughesNet.

It doesn’t matter if your home computer is a laptop or desktop or whether you operate on a Windows® or Macintosh® system. Satellite Internet connections are available to HughesNet home users no matter where you live in the contiguous United States. The only piece of equipment you need to provide is your own computer.
HughesNet modem HN9000 You can choose to buy or lease your equipment when you sign up for Internet access via satellite. The equipment is necessary because it interprets messages from your computer to the satellite.

A HughesNet-certified installer will bring the equipment to your home and install the device with a power supply near your computer.

HughesNet coaxial cable As a standard part of HughesNet, Hughes will install two 100-foot coaxial cables to allow your home Internet service to be connected. These cables are used to connect the computer to the modem and to the satellite dish.

HughesNet satellite dish The satellite dish, also called an antenna, will be installed to the roof of your home or on your property using mounting brackets. A radio will also be installed near the satellite dish.

Can I get high-speed Internet in my area?

HughesNet works very well as a broadband alternative in states with a high percentage of rural households. Many states are largely rural with very little broadband connectivity outside of urban areas. Other states have a higher percentage of households with cable or DSL, but still lack broadband connectivity in certain unserved areas. Read about how HughesNet Internet by satellite works.

What is your upload/download threshold policy (Fair Access Policy)?

What is the Fair Access Policy?
To ensure fair Internet access for all HughesNet® subscribers, Hughes maintains a Fair Access Policy. This policy establishes an equitable balance in Internet access for all HughesNet subscribers. Hughes assigns a download allowance to each service plan of the amount of data that may be continuously downloaded within a 24-hour period. Subscribers who exceed their plan’s download allowance will experience a temporary reduction of speed, though they will still be able to handle casual browsing.

How does the Fair Access Policy work?
The policy is implemented automatically by monitoring your usage over a rolling 24-hour period. Each HughesNet service plan is assigned a Download Allowance. The Download Allowance is the amount of data (in bytes) which can be downloaded by a subscriber without restriction within a rolling 24-hour period. As you download at a high rate, your allowance will be depleted. During periods of low use, your remaining Allowance will slowly recover. When your usage over the past 24 hours exceeds that allowance, you will enter the Recovery Zone, and your download speeds will be reduced. During the Recovery Zone, your Download Allowance is slowly replenished, and after approximately 24 hours, your download speed will be restored. If you continue to use your service to download in the Recovery Zone, it may take more than 24 hours for your Allowance to be replenished and your speed to return to normal.

Who is affected by the Fair Access Policy?
Some users consume much more bandwidth than the average user, and they will experience reduced download speeds as a result of exceeding their Download Allowance. You may be surprised to find that the top 1% of users download 9 times more than the average user. By providing a Download Allowance, more of the shared bandwidth is made available for everyone to use. Most users will have a better experience as a result of the Fair Access Policy.

How can I manage how my download usage?
HughesNet offers a free Status Meter. This can be downloaded at HughesNet Tools. The Status Meter is a small application that resides in your system tray (Windows) or Dock (Mac OSX) and monitors your Download Allowance. If you exceed your allowance, the Status Meter will alert you right away and provide one-click access to the HughesNet Restore Tokens site, with options to reset your daily allowance and get back up to speed instantly. You will be able to see your remaining allowance in real-time, so you’ll know how much data you have left.

What is the Restore Token?
Sometimes you might want to reset your allowance without waiting for the Recovery Zone to end. For these occasions, we provide easy access to Restore Tokens – a service that instantly resets your Download Allowance and lifts the speed restriction.

Each HughesNet subscriber receives one complimentary Restore Token each month on his or her billing date. You can use this free Token any time you exceed your Download Allowance. You can also purchase additional Tokens throughout the month, priced based on your plan’s Download Allowance.

Online activities such as viewing Websites, checking email, watching video clips or similar short streaming media, and automatic software updates are unlikely to cause you to exceed the Download Allowance.

Typically, on the Home plan, to reach your Download Allowance in a 24-hour period, you would have to download any of the following:

  • 67 photos (at 3 MB each)
  • 50 songs (at 4 MB each)
  • 10 video clips (at 20 MB each)

Does the Fair Access Policy apply to uploads or downloads?
Currently, the Fair Access Policy applies only to downloads – that is, data that you receive from the Internet. Uploads, for example sending photos in your email, are not counted against your Download Allowance.

What activities may cause a subscriber to exceed their Download Allowance?
Some activities are more likely to exceed the Download Allowance and trigger the application of the Fair Access Policy. Several examples are listed below:

  • Full-length movie or video downloads (e.g., Netflix streaming movies)
  • Downloading very large files (i.e., file sizes that are close in size to the download allowance of your service plan)
  • Peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing programs such as Napster, Kazaa or LimeWire
  • Continuous downloading or viewing streaming media content such as audio or video programming
  • Hosting of server devices such as email, FTP or Web servers
  • Hosting computer applications such as Web-cam feeds
  • Internet-based PC backup services that archive your data on a central server
  • Extensive downloading of attachments from Usenet Newsgroups (NNTP)
  • Use of BitTorrent applications

Excessive downloading or use of the services described above may cause subscribers to exceed their Download Allowance and have their download speed reduced under the Fair Access Policy.

Note that all data downloaded to your PC or PCs will count against your Download Allowance. We encourage you to take a close look at the software you install and understand how it will use your Internet connection.

What will my Internet access be like in the Recovery Zone?
During the Recovery Zone, when your Download Allowance is exceeded, you will experience reduced download speeds for about 24 hours. During this period, your HughesNet service can still be used for activities such as Web browsing and viewing emails, but speeds will be significantly slower than your standard plan rate.

If I exceed my Download Allowance, what should I do?
Minimize your heavy bandwidth activities. If you continue to download heavily during the Recovery Zone, the period will be extended. If you frequently exceed your Download Allowance, or if you find that your Download Allowance is too small for your needs, you might consider upgrading your service plan. Or, to get the most out of your service, you can schedule large downloads to occur during the Download Zone using a Download Manager.

How do I verify whether I have exceeded my Download Allowance?
You can track your past usage and Fair Access Policy status by going to www.myHughesNet.com, clicking on Customer Care, then clicking on the Check My Usage link in the Resources section.

What is the Download Zone?
The Download Zone is the off-peak hours of the day, when you can download data at full speed without counting against your Download Allowance. The hours of use start at 2:00 am and end at 7:00 am, Eastern Time.

Why was the Download Zone implemented?
This period has been provided for HughesNet subscribers to schedule the downloading of automated updates or to download other large files.

Are there any limitations to what I can do during the Download Zone?
Yes. Download speeds are not guaranteed during these hours and the HughesNet Acceptable Use Policy is still in effect.

What do you recommend I do during the Download Zone?
We recommend that you automatically schedule your system updates during the Download Zone. If you install HughesNet Tools, your Windows Updates will automatically be scheduled for this period. You can also use a download manager software application to automatically schedule large file downloads to occur during the Download Zone.

If I have exceeded my Download Allowance, will using my service during the Download Zone extend the duration of my reduced download speed?
No, downloading during the Download Zone will not extend the Recovery Zone.

What will happen if I'm in the middle of a large download at the onset of the Download Zone?
If your speed is reduced at the start of the Download Zone, your download speed will return to your normal plan rate, and the downloaded data will not increase your recovery time. If your speed was not reduced (that is, you had not exceeded your Download Allowance), your usage during the Download Zone will not be counted toward your Download Allowance.

What will happen if I'm in the middle of a download at the end of the Download Zone?
If you were over your Download Allowance at the start of the Download Zone, your download speeds will be reduced again at the end of the Zone. If you were not over your Download Allowance, then the usage during the Download Zone will not count against your allowance, but the portion of the download that occurs after the Zone ends will begin to count against your Allowance.

Can I still use the Download Zone if I have already exceeded my Download Allowance?
Yes – during the Download Zone, all users may download without any speed restrictions, subject to your plan’s rate and available capacity.

How fast is HughesNet broadband Internet service for your home?

HughesNet® offers a number of Internet service choices to meet your broadband needs. The Home plan offers download speeds up to 1.0 Mbps, while our fastest plan, ElitePremium, offers download speeds up to 5.0 Mbps. Learn more about the plans and speeds available.

Listed speeds are available only through Hughes’ new satellite. The majority of subscribers will have access to these faster speeds. However, approximately 3% will not be able to receive these speeds as a result of trees or other obstacles that block the signal from the satellite to the home. In these cases, Hughes can offer slightly slower Internet access via another satellite with download speeds up to 700 Kbps, 1.0 Mbps, and 1.5 Mbps; and upload speeds up to 128 Kbps, 200 Kbps and 200 Kbps for Home, Pro and ProPlus service plans, respectively.

When you connect to the Internet using HughesNet, the upload and download speeds you experience will vary based on a variety of factors including the configuration of your computer, the number of concurrent users, network or Internet congestion, the speed of the Websites you are accessing, and other factors. Stated speeds and uninterrupted use of service are not guaranteed. In all cases, actual upload speed will likely be lower than speed indicated during peak hours. See our typical speeds FAQ for more information. Download speeds may also be temporarily slowed in cases when patterns of system usage exceed the download threshold for an extended period of time. See the HughesNet Fair Access Policy for more information.

What connection speeds will I typically get with HughesNet?

When you connect to the Internet using HughesNet, the upload and download speeds you experience will vary based on a variety of factors including the configuration of your computer, the number of concurrent users, network or Internet congestion, the speed of the Websites you are accessing, and other factors. Stated speeds and uninterrupted use of service are not guaranteed. During peak hours, actual upload and download speed will likely be lower than speeds indicated.

If you choose to run a VPN over your satellite service, your data speeds may be reduced by as much as 50-75%. In addition, we do not recommend using HughesNet® to run time-sensitive applications that require fractions-of-a-second user inputs (such as twitch gameplay or real-time equities trading).

Top
What is transmission latency?
Latency refers to the amount of time it takes a packet of data to travel across a network. With satellite service, that data must travel up to the satellite and back (about 45,000 miles). This round trip adds about a half-second delay to the total time your computer takes to communicate with a Website or host server. Therefore, time-sensitive apsplications that require fractions-of-a-second user inputs (such as multi-player “twitch” games or real-time equities trading) are not recommended with HughesNet®.
Why is there a requirement that the HughesNet system be professionally installed?
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires that trained professionals install any satellite system that both sends and receives signals.
What is included with a standard installation?
    • Note: For Recovery Act Funds Customers: To be eligible for the Recovery Act Funds, your home must be in an area without other broadband options available to you (including wireless high-speed Internet, cable Internet, and DSL.) You will be asked to sign an agreement at the time of installation that confirms you are unable to receive wireless high-speed Internet, cable Internet, or DSL at your address where you wish to receive service.
    • The HughesNet satellite modem (Indoor Unit or IDU) with power supply – connected to your computer with a HughesNet-supplied LAN cable.
    • A HughesNet satellite antenna (dish), radio, and mount. The antenna will be located:
      • With a clear line of sight to the southern sky.
      • At least 5 feet off the ground so that it is out of reach of small children.
      • So that it is accessible with a 25-foot ladder for quick and easy servicing should it ever be required. Usually on the first level of the residence.
    • Up to 125 feet of RG6 Dual Coaxial Cable
      • Run outside from the antenna to the HughesNet modem.
      • Through a single exterior wall penetration to an adjacent interior wall.
      • Terminated on the inside wall with a two-connector faceplate.
    • A grounding block is provided and the entire system grounded to an NEC-approved bonding point.
    • All outdoor penetrations and water-resistant compression fitting are thoroughly weather-sealed.

What n on-standard installation items are not covered?

Customers sometimes want to enhance or customize their installation to specific requirements. Some of the more common enhancements are mentioned below. While they are not included in a HughesNet standard installation, these enhancements may be purchased directly from our independent HughesNet installer. All costs for non-standard work or equipment will be itemized by the independent HughesNet installer on the HughesNet Installation Reference Sheet and require your authorization signature before proceeding.

    • Wireless or hard-wired network routers.
    • Configuration of your computer(s) to work with a wireless or hard-wired network router.

Can the HughesNet certified installer hook up my home network?
If you’d like, you can inquire if this option is available through your installer when you set your installation appointment. However, home networks are not included or supported by HUGHES technical support. Multiple simultaneous users may degrade service. Uninterrupted service and stated speeds not guaranteed.
How quickly will I be up and running?
On average, most customers are installed within 2 weeks of their order. When you place your order today, your name will be provided to a certified HughesNet® installer, who will contact you within 3 days. You and the installer will then work out a mutually agreeable date and time for your installation. If less than 2 weeks is too soon for you, just place your order when you're ready for HughesNet high-speed Internet service!
What can I expect at the time of installation?

I’ve placed my order – what happens next?

A professional installer will call you within 3 business days of your order.

What if I don’t hear from them?
If you have Internet access, visit our order inquiry site. This site provides the contact information for your assigned installer and distributor. If you do not have Internet access, call toll-free: 866-765-3251

Who is my assigned installer?
If you provided an email address at the time of order, we will send you an email with the contact information for your installer and distributor.

Can I install it myself?
No. The FCC mandates that all installations are completed by a certified professional installer.

What if I need to change my appointment? Contact your installer directly to reschedule.

    • Plan for your installation.
      • Think about where you want the modem installed in your house (next to your computer)
      • Verify that your computer is compatible. Minimum requirements are:
        • Windows 2000 PE or higher (including Windows XP and VISTA) or Mac OS 10.1 or higher, and
        • Network capability (10/100 Ethernet pre-equipped)

Where is the satellite dish installed?
In a location on the roof of your home that has both a line of sight to the southern sky and is accessible with a 24-foot ladder for quick and easy servicing.

Do I need to be at home during the installation?
Yes. There are often several locations where the satellite dish can be installed. The installer needs your help to select the best location for you.

How long does it take?
Approximately 4 hours.

What’s a “clear view of the southern sky”?
The satellite dish mounted at your home must be able to “see” the satellite that’s positioned in the southern sky without trees, buildings, or barriers in the way. This “clear view” is needed so that you can send and receive information.

Why does my modem look different from my neighbor’s modem?
The modem may look different depending on which satellite it communicates with. All modems come with a minimum 24-month limited service warranty.

What are the computer system requirements for HughesNet?

HughesNet® lets you connect your computer to the Internet whether you are running a Windows® or Macintosh® operating system. In order to ensure you get the most out of your Internet experience, HughesNet has developed these minimum requirements:

  • Windows 2000 PE or higher (including Windows XP and VISTA) or Mac OS 10.1 or higher, and
  • Network capability (10/100 Ethernet pre-equipped)
Is HughesNet compatible with my Mac?
Yes, HughesNet® is compatible with Mac OS 10.1 or higher. 10/100 Ethernet connectivity is also required.
Can I use HughesNet to run a small network?

Yes, you can connect multiple home computers and laptops to a single HughesNet® Internet connection. Home networking equipment may be required and is not included with your HughesNet system. For network setup, support, and configuration, contact your network hardware manufacturer and/or operating system software developer (HUGHES is not responsible for home network configuration or management).

Can I use a PCMCIA card adapter for my laptop?

Yes. All you need to connect your computer to the HughesNet® modem is either a 10/100 Ethernet Network Interface Card or a PCMCIA adapter with an Ethernet connector. The HughesNet system includes an Ethernet cable to connect your computer to the HughesNet modem.

Can I run a VPN over HughesNet?

HughesNet® Home Service plan is not compatible with VPNs.

You may use a VPN with HughesNet, but you will likely experience reduced speeds as much as 50–75%. You can restore your connection to full speed by simply disabling your VPN client when your session is over.

Note: HughesNet Technical Support does not provide help with configuring or troubleshooting problems associated with VPN clients.

Why does the service slow down when used in conjunction with a VPN?
HughesNet® uses sophisticated acceleration techniques to enable high-speed performance over satellite. These acceleration techniques require access to data packet header information, which is blocked when IPSec-based VPNs are used. These VPNs encrypt the data and create a secure tunnel through the HughesNet network. The encrypted data cannot be processed by HughesNet's acceleration techniques, therefore resulting in slower performance
